Our Cherished Community

At Decatur County REMC, we are more than an electric cooperative — we are a member-owned organization built to serve our communities.

Since 1938, our mission has remained the same: to provide safe, reliable, affordable, and friendly service to the members we proudly serve. Every decision we make is guided by that commitment — from maintaining and strengthening our electric system to investing in technology, education, and community programs that improve everyday life across our service area.

As a cooperative, our members are at the center of everything we do. We are locally governed, community focused, and dedicated to serving the people and places that make our communities strong.

7 Cooperative Principles

Open & Voluntary Membership

  • Cooperatives are voluntary organizations.
  • They are open to all individuals able to use their services.
  • Membership requires a willingness to accept responsibilities.
  • Membership requires a willingness to accept responsibilities.Cooperatives operate without gender discrimination.
  • They operate without social, racial, political, religious discrimination.

Democratic Member Control

  • Cooperatives are democratic organizations controlled by their members.
  • Members actively participate in setting policies and making decisions.
  • Elected representatives are accountable to the membership.
  • In primary cooperatives, members have equal voting rights (one member, one vote).
  • Cooperatives at other levels are organized in a democratic manner.

Members' Economic Participation

  • Members contribute equitably to the capital of their cooperative.
  • They democratically control this capital.
  • Typically, part of the capital is common property for the cooperative.
  • Members usually receive limited or no compensation on subscribed capital.

The purposes for capital contributions include:

  • Developing the cooperative, possibly by setting up reserves.
  • Reserving a portion of the capital as indivisible.
  • Benefiting members in proportion to their transactions with the cooperative.
  • Supporting other activities approved by the membership.

Autonomy & Independence

  • Cooperatives are autonomous, self-help organizations controlled by their members.
  • If they enter into agreements with other organizations, including governments, or raise capital from external sources, they do so on terms that ensure democratic control by their members and maintain their cooperative autonomy.

Education, Training, & Information

  • Cooperatives offer education and training to members, representatives, managers, and employees.
  • They promote cooperation by informing the public, especially youth and opinion leaders, about its nature and benefits.

Cooperation Among Cooperatives

  • Cooperatives enhance their effectiveness and bolster the cooperative movement.
  • They achieve this by collaborating through local, national, regional, and international structures.
